Electrical problem

I have a 1999 vette and the brake lights are out except the center. The hazard flashers work!!! any ideas? I wasnt sure about the feed from the pedal switch if the center and the 4 rears were different.  

that might take a few diagrams to see how they are wired...   the power for the brake lights comes out the right side of the first diagram..   into the brake light switch.. then out the left side of the second diagram.. then into the right side of the third diagram...



~~~~~~~~~~~~~~beware the diagrams.. if you don't have an export model .. only pay attention to the Domestic side of the diagrams..  export models have totally separate bulbs for the brake lights from the turn signal lights..

here is the left rear turn and stop lamp wiring.. again.. ONLY pay attention to the domestic on the left side..




here is the Right side turn and stop lamp wiring...  again.. domestic is separate.. but on the right side this time..

this is the Domestic tail light wiring...




i personally would start by replacing the bulbs..    making sure that the tail light sockets ARE in contact with the wires on the base of the bulb..

post what you find...  

follow circuit 140 to the right in the first..

140 into the brake light switch on the second..

then 17 /  I  to the left from the second...

then 17 /   I  into the third

the 18 / F to the left brake light.

and 19/ G to the right brake light...



the HIgh mounted stop light IS not wired through the turn signal /hazard switch...

change the brake light bulbs first..  did i already say that???


but you say the hazard flashers work     hmmm....


do the hazard flashing tail lights actually flash.. at the back of the car...

do the turn signal lights work.... at the back of the car...


turn on the parking lights...   have somebody stand behind the car while you operate the turn signals..

if you have lost the ground connection... you might have the exact situation.. as there is enough ground to power just the hight mounted stop light through both filaments of all the bulbs..


OH.. and i know at least one person looking at the 5 diagrams above.. the first and third diagram are actually the same diagram...  i posted it twice to keep the flow of the circuit in one direction..
