I have a 1987 vette that is having ignition switch problems: sometimes the key refuses to turn from the off position, but when it does the car starts with no problem, then it has a tendency to not return to the lock position so that you can remove the key, only has 96000 on it and I want to know if replacing the lock cylinder will fix the problem,? I cleaned the key chip, also wonter about the 9 prong ignition switch??? help would be appreciated

yea... just run into that in a caddy.... and there is a post started on another forum where the key will NOT come out of the ignition...

i am taking that you have an Automatic transmission...
see the cable in the picture that goes up to the steering column...
look at the end right where it connects to the shifter frame..... its has an adjustment quite similar to the throttle valve cable... its usually a upside down U shape.. where you have to get your fingers under the U shape ends and push upward/inward.. this will raise the U shape to allow you to lift it up about 1/2 an inch... this frees the cable casing.. pushes it out... push it in slightly till you hear some noise in the column... then latch the U shape back into place...
try it...
you can actually see the u shape where the other cable passes behind it in the image....
sometimes its just the rubber boot that hangs up... sometimes something spills into the console and prevents free movement ..
this image might also help.. show you where the screws are and kinda how it comes apart...

please share this.....
on most of the newer cars this is also a problem GM wide with console shift..
