Hi - I have a 1988 C4 with an automatic transmission. The car currently has 20K miles on it. At 17K miles I was traveling at 55 mph and hit the accelerator. When I did this, something broke loose and my initial thought was that it had popped out of gear. I was able to continue to home a short distance away at a slow speed, pretty much idling because every time I hit the gas it would spin like the trans was slipping. I towed it to a repair shop and was told the torque converter had gone out and they need to replace a band. They hot flushed it and got nothing. I got it back and the shifting sucked. The consistent shifting I had come to know was gone and it didn't snap into gear it "floated" into gear. Several times I took it back and nothing seemed to be working. I don't know a lot about auto transmissions so I apologize for that but I do know when its not working properly. The last thing they tried was to remove the 8 cylinder governor and install a 6 cylinder. I went and picked up my car and my 8 cylinder governor and didn't go back. Im in Missoula Montana and my choices are pretty limited for shops to go to. Can anyone tell me what is likely going on and perhaps suggest a place anywhere around western Montana (hopefully within 500 miles) that can help me. Thanks

i am NOT a transmission specialist... i know my way around.. but..
22 years on a 700R4... thats good...
i would like to know.. if they dropped the pan... or if you did... examined the sediment in the bottom of the pan... look for fiber from the clutch linings.. look for steel filings.. (use a magnet) look for brass.. look for aluminum...
did they change the transmission filter.???? a flush will NOT clean the filter... no matter what they say... the filter is not cleanable.. it has to be carefully removed... wiggled out.. the sealing ring on the neck extracted from the opening in the transmission where its stuck.. a new filter installed... if you break it.. get another filter.. every parts store has transmission filter kits for this model... you have to have a big drain pan... and hopefully you have done something like this before...
700R4s are known for occasional failure... i would also want you to check the throttle valve cable at the throttle body... its the one that goes to the transmission.. make sure its connected and properly working.. oh yea right.. when the throttle is held at wide open. (engine off) there should be no slack..
if the cable is out of adjustment . the transmission will slip and be destroyed in a single trip down the block.. there is an article on the third page of the link below on how to adjust the TV cable..
how about reading some articles on it...

there are places like http://www.hughesperformance.com in arizona i know one of the builders there.. and several others who build transmissions and will ship them to you .. or to their approved installers near your location.. gm also probably still offers reman transmissions for this... these are very popular transmissions...
there are also people who scrap corvettes for their parts... they sell complete used transmissions.. try to get as late a transmission that you can.. the years were stamped in code on the side of the transmission just above the pan rail... you can probably get up to a 92 model.. i think that GM went to the 4L60E in 93 and thats computer shifted... some later non electronic versions are known as 4l60.. and then the fully electronic shifted 4L60E that will NOT work in your car...
what ever you *** DO NOT turn loose of your old transmission until you are sure the replacement works properly.. the corvettes use as i recall a special tail housing...
