I want to find out if my 1979 l82 4sp. vette came with an all steel camshaft timing gear or if it has the plastic toothed gear.if it is plastic i will need to change out the timing chain set. thanks, patrick

throw a 5/8 deep socket on the crank bolt... with a breaker bar...
rock the harmonic damper back and forth..
if you feel more than 5/8 of an inch of movement as measured at the surface of the damper.. the chain and gears need to be changed...
5/8 is a lot of slack.. but when the nylon teeth fall off.. there can be way over 5/8 of an inch...
i normally find 3/8 to 5/8" on many motors..
