75 corvette lockout spring on shifter

Hello again, Having alittle trouble getting my 75 corvette shifter back in place. In putting it back together on the inside, there is a long spring, a control rod with a finger grip on it and the shift ball. I put the spring on the control rod, slid it in the grove and put the ball on. The problem is when I pull up on the finger grip to put in gear, everything works but the finger grip will not pop back down, you have to push it down manually. My question is, is there a spring missing that pushes the finger grip down? The long spring fits on the rod just fine.

Any help would be greatly appreciate.
