Any idea why it would smoke only on pass side?

Bought my first vette.  It's a '74 and in need of lots of work.  First I'm just trying to get her running right.  This thing is a mess under the hood.  Wiring is a knightmare.  The last guy really cobbed this one up.  And yes, I hope he finds this post.  He deserves it after using a lamp cord wire to run to the junkyard HEI dizzy he slapped in.  OK, I fixed that and replaced the plugs and wires. It ran like @#$% still.  Long story short it was off 1 tooth.  I replaced the timing set and timed it OK after that.  Engine still has a huge miss!  What would you try next?  Oh yeah, and it smokes out of the pass side exhaust but not at all on the left.  I was thinking maybe a valve?  I'll end up building a stroker for it anyway, but I just want to ride it a little first.

there are two different tests...

first.. you will usually need a remote starter switch..  cheep ones start at 6 bucks...

a compression test....   this will tell you which cylinder is low...     with 2 squirts of oil into the cylinder after the first test will tell you if the rings are leaking..

a cylinder leak down test .....   this uses compressed air... a pressure regulator, a hose with spark plug threads on the end with a tiny opening in the end...    this will let compressed air into the cylinder and give you an idea of how much leakage there is ... and where its coming from...    if it comes out the oil filler cap...  rings or piston..  if it comes out the exhaust pipe..   exhaust valve...     from the carb... the intake valve...

i use a slightly different test...  i take the valve core out of the end of my compression tester hose.. bump the cylinder to be tested to TDC...  use shop air  to pressurize the cylinder..( warning.. the crank will turn about half the time, so keep everything clear)   this is just a cheep cylinder leak down test... you will be able to also see if the air is coming out the oil filler cap...  the carb or exhaust.. i mostly use this test to search and verify head gasket leaks into the cooling system..

if you can do a compression test and you find any low cylinders... you may have found your problem...  but i would also pull the valve cover on the side that smokes... and verify the oil drain back holes are open...

when the oil drain back holes in the ends of the head get clogged...  the oil that lubes the rocker arms fills the valve cover.. since SBC motors used Orings under the keepers as valve stem seals and a steel shield  to keep oil spray off the stem...  but when the whole cover fills with oil...  it will get up around the stems and get pulled into the  valve guide and get burned..  causing smoke..

there is a chance that do to the incorrect ignition timing that piston and ring damage has happened..

there is also a chance that you have problems with the rocker arms .. or the cam has gone flat.. both of them require you to pull the valve covers...   be sure that you blow any dirt off the top of the motor first...  so when you pull the valve covers .. you don't drop it in...
