is the security light flashing or on...
these cars did have pellets in the key shank... that activates the ECM... if the wrong key is used.. the car will start for a second.. there are 15 different blanks..
it will set a code that will only last for 4 minutes..
if the security light is on... and you have tried all the different keys that you have to the car.. waiting four minutes between tries.. you can spray some WD40 into the ignition lock cylinder.. put a rag on the floor under the bottom of the column.. it will drip out... work the key in and out a bunch of times... spray some more... then work it on and off... then wait 4 minutes see if the car starts and runs..
there are a bunch of other things that could be doing this also..
like a bad 3 wire oil pressure switch under the distributer.. a bad fuel pump relay..
could also be a bad fuel pump or dirty fuel filter...
see if the security light is on first when you try to start it.. that indicates the VATS system..... its easy to repair...
do ask for instructions before taking it in for replacement of the lock cylinder..

if the security light is flashing.... there is a problem with the Vats system....
unplug the vats harness under the column... 2 tiny white wires in a Orange jacket, measure the resistance in the key pellet... stick the key in the lock.. then measure the resistance on the column side of the harness... see if it is the same....
you can see what the wiring harness looks like in this picture of a new vats ignition lock cylinder
http://contentinfo.autozone.com/znetcs/product-info/en/US/gen/LC14340/image/8/
this rules out the lock cylinder and wiring... and that is where most of the problems are...
i have found the vats wires pinched in the steering column mounting bracket...
start with that...
the 85 vats system is built into the ecm... the 86 and newer uses a separate vats module near the ecm...
i normally buy a spare lock cylinder with the vats wiring.. usually 35 bucks or so... unplug the harness under the column.. plug the new lock cylinder into the car side of the harness... stick a proper key to the car into the lock... it does not have to turn.. only to be the right resistance value.. then see if you can start the car with the key in the column.. this does take two vats keys... but it can be done with a blank key....
you do have to also understand... that there is a 4 minute timer running when the system is powered up and the wrong key or no key is measured by the system...
there are 15 different resistance values so it is important to get the right key blank...

Got a problem with my 2002 Z06 passenger door power lock/unlock. It will lock every time using either the remote or door switch, when I try to unlock using either one, it will click and I can feel movement in the door but will not unlock, I can try several times 6-12 times and then for reasons known only to God and your local Fortune Teller it unlocks? Of course I can reach over and manually unlock with no problem. Any body know where to start?
