My bro has a 78 vette but im going to be taking it from him and bringing it back to california because i am getting out of the military and will have the time and money to work on it so..If the air conditioner is not working how do i trouble shoot to find out which part is broken so i wont have to replace everything?

get the car first.. then worry about what does not work....
if you have to do the a/c system... new parts are easily available..
you will find that autozone.com has some repair info that you will need if you log on... not a lot on the a/c system. but a ton of other stuff for vettes... 63 to 82 in the first section... with many wiring diagrams and a few vacuum diagrams..
you might also want to examine other parts on the motor so you don't have to move the ac compressor again and again to do stuff...

It might just be low on feon, the compressor does not operate when its low. you will need it tested.then you move forward from there.
