Hi all.... I just very recently got a 94 vette with 29,000 miles. Everything works perfectly, but with all the stories I hear about the Optispark ignitions going bad/causing problems would it be best to just replace it now before anything comes up? Also if replacement is advised does anyone have suggestions as to what make to go with like maybe MSD or a factory replacement? Any help is greatly appreciated as this is my first vette and I'd like to keep her awhile.

examine the ignition coil first...   look for circular power marks around the core near the coil frame...  this indicates leaking high voltage....  replace any coil when you start getting misfires...   it is far cheeper than the optispark unit...

you also might want to verify that the vacuum hose that pulls Ozone out of the optispark housing is properly working...

without this vacuum keeping the ozone levels down...  the cap, rotor and possibly the electronics will fail...

ozone is created in the cap by the rotor tip to cap terminal electrical arcing..  this is normal...   but the optispark system is mounted low and needs to be water proof... so the vacuum system is how the problem is cured..

there are several articles on it in the tech section...  put optispark in the search window...  if you don't find it.. pull down on the place where it has your search term.. you can search the performance group or company wide...

leaky valve cover gaskets are hard on the spark plug wires.. and cause more problems than the optispark...  the oil leaking down the cylinder heads swells the wires and causes high voltage leaks...

Thanks for the advice Wayne... I'll give the ignition system a good look tomorrow and see what I can find.
