According to rogerscorvette.com (http://www.rogerscorvette.com/specs/89.htm), 1989 was the year that the ZF 6-speed manual transmission was first available in the Corvette.  According to Wikipedia (I know, Wiki has limitations), with the introduction of the C5s in 1997, the Borg-Warner T-56 six-speed manual transmission replaced the ZF 6-speed in Corvettes. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Borg-Warner_T-56_transmission).

Thanks buzz,
I was talking w/a service manager @ a dealer here in AL, I asked him what vettes would he stay away from if he was buying used and High mileage. His answer was,70-96, Frontends in the 70's, wiring nightmares in the 80's to the 4+3 transmissons ( if ya can find anyone to even work on them ),  1/2 shafts, small fitting insides, not built to last, under powered motors to the LT1 being a butt pain to keep running correctly. In 97 the Ls1 was a better motor and ya got a great body style that you felt good sitting inside. He did say that total restorations were good, but why, when you could get a 97 for a less amount. In his book 69 and under and 97 and above was the way to go. I might be off on a year here or there, but ya can get the over all jest of what he said.
