Hello! Im new here, great forum, hopefully I will be a vette owner too very soon!
I have some questions/concerns about a 74 L48 w/4 speed manual I looked at today. -First of all -as beat as it looked its awesome. fell in love instantly nevermind the penny size chip in the fiberglass, cracked headlight cover, cheap replacement rear bumper that makes it look like a 75.. in a nutshell this thing is hidden on a typical used car lot full of junk and used tires and has seen better days.
But it starts up and runs, and idles smoothly. Its got 1 or 2 x 65250 miles who knows. No rust. Im trying to get an idea what its worth so I dont lowball the guy and anger him but not screw myself either. He wants $6000 obo. Im thinking no freaking way is this car worth that much. and heres why.
-bad "Maaco" paint job, as evidenced from the white overspray underneath and in the wheelwells. -Bad tires. -Appears to need sway link bushings, which will lead to all bushings I imagine when I look underneath- Front and rear -cant tell but maybe an alignment, need to drive it, forgot to look at tire wear -Headlights dont flip up, they do turn on though. I understand theyre simple vacuum motors. My question is why did he tell me he just disconnected them and not try to find the leak or see if the motors are shot... -the cheap rear bumper with red (no amber, or chrome ringed lenses) domed tail lights -no rear emblem. -wipers dont work and I live in florida where it rains everyday -random disconnected, cut, and frayed wires around the wiper motor/distributor. -Some parts of the wiring looms unassembled like someone was tracing a short(Ive been there before ! -"Contender" intake manifold and the original valve covers were spray painted orange - while in the car, and attatched to all lines hoses etc. So it looks like crap. -cheap little 8" open element filter over an Eldlebrock 4bbl carb -blower motor dont work -no AC belt (does this mean something else - or did the previous owner want all the HP he could get?) -noisy lifters or valvetrain - click click click click .. I could hear it sitting in the car. -Saddle interior -interior is not watertight at all, smelled of major moisture -windows have a .5" gap at the top and sides when rolled up. rain just goes right on in! -soggy floor from the rain, but I dont think there was any major rust. -doors need to be slammed to be shut. (friend told me they just need to be realigned..?) -TACH does not work. -CLOCK does not work. -Oil PSI read 70 at idle not warm - not sure on the spec, or if those guages are accurate -Probably needs brakes, the E brake was not connected or waaay out of adjustment, handle came up all the way with no resistance. -Drivers side door had to be opened from the inside, and was difficult then as well due to a tough to turn lock (door alignment?) -Both exterior door handles need replacement - unless i can get springs to hold up the "flaps"
So anyway I know this is a Nice vette with potential. here are the good parts
-Its awesome and I love it. -nice throaty dual exhaust sound -ITS A 4 SPEED !! -didnt see any rust underneath -I assume - and was told that I could "drive it right out of here" and with a tune up take it wherever. -all matching wheels and caps with chrome rings -overall good exterior and with a good polish it will look as good as white can look -directionals, lights, brake lights all work except the headlights dont come up -good glass -underneath appeared solid and dry of fluid leaks
With a few weekends and nights of work and not too much money I can probably get this to daily driver/beater condition(my goal) and fix it more and more as I go. I like old cars, love C3s. Dont race, nor do I want a show car. Just a daily driver thats easy to work on and has that old charm that cars today dont have.
So whats the verdict? How low can I go, Ill drive it before I offer him anything..
I dont want to pay near $6000 in case it needs more than I foresee. I dont mind being nickel and dimed. I dont want a money pit.
Thank you very much in advance! ryan

Sounds like a ton of work to me, remember there's a fine line between used and used up. Take a stab at what the repairs will cost and see if you can get the price to drop close to that. That dealer paid whole sale more than likely. Here's a phone # of a friend of mine in Orlando is a Owner of a dealership, just tell him what your concerns are. He can help you find another Vette if this doesn't work out. He bought a vette in the same type of problems. This is in no way a sell pitch to sell a car for my friend, Paul is a fountain of car information. He will help you anyway he can, go to a auction with him, that's how I met him. Very Kool guy.

I bought my 2006 Avalanche from him in Orlando for $10,6 w/99k miles, shown room condidtion, so, yes I trust him Just tell him you know Paul in Alabama. Hope this helps.

Thank you!
Im looking on corvette central now at what it costs to fix what it needs to get a ballpark idea. Anyone know if a better vette parts site?
After I figure out $ what $ Im looking at to fix it, I need to know
"How much is a beat up, needs work, running, 4 speed, 74 vette worth?"
I guess what im saying is, its a corvette. Not a camaro, or ford LTD for that matter. They have a following and that helps the value even if its "alot of work"
But how much does that factor in to the price?

$6000 is way to much for a car that needs that much work, even if you can do the work yourself.
