84 vette smokin transmission i think?

i drained the fluid in the transmission and i waa told it took 10 quarts?pints? but neway i put 8 in an the bottom of my car mostly to the rear was smoking? i didnt change the filter or the gasket but the gasket lookd good but i found out today it was only suppose to hold 4 or 5 so i drain'd sum more out an got thr level right but still smokin an im worried i messd up wat do yall think about it
