84 hood emblem?

a year ago or so a guy at a corvette show told me that certain vin's on the 1984 corvette did not come with a hood emblem. can anyone confirm this? he seemed to know the actual dates that this happened. and i think i remember reading about this in a vette book. have i lost my mind?
