My dip stick in My 79 Stingray just broke off. Has anyone replaced the tube for the oil read? I am not a car guy and was wondering if I could do something like this.
Thanks for the help

Easiest way is to remove the engine oil pan Not sure if this a job for the unexperienced.

well that will help a lot...
there are multiple ways to get the upper half inch out of the top of the block...
yes .. a bolt extractor... there area several type...
straight fluted... spiral fluted. and spiral fluted with a pitch that almost looks like its threaded..
and since i do my own valves jobs.. i have a full selection of sioux adjustable valve grinding pilots.. the cheep versions were 40 bucks each.. most were about 50 to 70.. so i only use them rarely.. they can get bent and become expensive trash...
i have also used a properly selected flat blade screw driver..
!~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
i usually drive one of the various easy outs in. just hard enough to leave a dent in the tube pressed into the block.. i try to turn it.. if it will spin the broken section of tube.. great.. spin it a few times.. it will sometimes allow you to spin it out of the hole..
be sure that you don't make little shavings that will drop down into the oil pan.. that would be bad..
once you get them spinning... they will usually come out with a little elbow grease..
i have also had.. i think its gone now.. a single GM bolt that has tapered threads on the end to allow them to spin it in and align the parts even if they were off center.. it will start a few threads in the top of the broken piece and allow you to pry it up...
my favorite. is the easy out with the thread pitch that is almost like a bolt thread...
i have driven it into the broken off piece... spun it.. to reduce the outside of the broken piece.. removed the easy out.. driven it through a nut ... and stacked various amounts of washers under the nut.. so i can thread it into the broken off piece.. and tighten it slightly.. this lifts the broken off piece up just slightly.. i then take it back out and add another washer.. and pull a tiny bit more.. this has gotten out the really tough ones.. like dodge van versions that go through the timing cover..
the idea is to not expand it in the hole... but to turn it.. as that will reduce the outer diameter...
hopefully this will help someone in the future...
when installing the new dip stick.. you might really want to choose several ways to do it... if there is full access to the dip stick... you can drop a nut or washers down just above the expanded band.. and use something to tap that part in..
i have also found a short bolt installed in the top end of the new dipstick tube.. you can drive it in with many small light hammer strikes..
in one shop.. the boss actually had a section of tubular material that they had cut a long notch in.. so they could drive the dip stick tube in without bending it..
think of a long slot like a oxygen sensor socket.. ..
and.... people.. please let sleeping posts sleep..
somebody on another board.. answered a post that was 5 years old..

Hay Man,with it being broke off like that I think the best advise I can give you is to take it to someone who has the experence to drop the oil pan and get it out from below. The reason being is that you dont want any metal shavings to end up in your oil pan from trying to get it out from topside.Hope this helps,Sincerely bmj
