This is from Colin Parker's Feb '08 artical.

They were thinking of using Holley 770 on the zz427.
Does this carb use a power valve which needs vacuum
which a high lift cam might downgrade? Does the 510-
540 lift cam give an eratic idle?  I am runnig a set
of bow-tie Al 110cc heads on my 427 at present with
Holley carb and 450 lift cam. But I might like to
upgrade. Any thoughts?

According to GMPP, the new ZL1 offers plenty of vacuum and a relatively civil idle in as-delivered form. Will it run as smoothly as your .450-cammed engine? No, but it will be perfectly acceptable given its high-performance focus. (By way of comparison, the original ZL1 used a .560/.600 solid-lifter cam, a 850 Holley, and a 12.5:1 compression ratio.)

If you're still concerned about drivability, you may wish to check out some of GMPP's other big-block crate engines, which range in focus from towing to all-out drag racing.
