my 85 had a similar problem--every time it rained good, the footwells would be soaked!
i'm thinking something furry ate holes in my firewall, but it turned out to be...the roof!
my first thought would be to check that the retaining plates are tight and then that you have all the lock down screws in place and properly tightened;
failing that, i'd replace all the weatherproofing around the roof, windscreen and rear window support;
i even went so far as to get later model screws--sure they protrude a bit but they torqque much easier and are easier to get out on the fateful day you strip one of them;
and forget the cute little factory wrench, go to the $2 bin at any auto parts store and pick up a full set of torx bits and get a nice standard ratchet with the money you saved;
yes it will be heavier in your hand but you will dog down the screws much quicker and more evenly as a result of the torque and travel the longer handle gives you better control over;

I had an 85 that had a similar problem on the driver's side. When I had my Vette mechanic put it on the rack, we found a crack in the floor pan. Patched it and problem solved. If it's coming from a bad seal in the tops, you should be able to see any leaks form that area. If your door sills are wet that may give you a clue, but if they are not, I would look for something underneath.

Hate to say this but some 84-86's had a problem with the windshield frame delaminating from the firewall. Obviously if this happens you can tell better with the top off. If the "A" pillars aren't shaky check the seals around the hood and firewall to just in case.
