Rear Engine Corvette in three pieces to live again

First time here,  maybe you guys know all about this.  A friend from Effingham, IL tells me the Corvette museum there is restoring (rebirth) of a concept rear engine Vette from 1961 or so.  The story their shop told him was that Smokey Yunich was in charge of destroying the car, cut it into three pieces, took it to a salvage yard, had it certified as being demoulished, & made an agreement with the yard to take the remains into his (Smokey's) possession.  My friend saw the car, said it resembled the String Ray, but pre-dated that series by a few years.
