The speedometer is howling!

My '74 vette has a howling speedometer. If I come to a stop and then accelerate it will stay quiet for a while then resume squealing and howling and the needle will jump crazily up to 100 mph then down to 25mph... anyone experience anything like this? Any hints? Thanks

Sounds like a bad speedo cable. If not the cable, the whole speedo might need a rebuilt internally.

Try lubing the speedo cable,if that does'nt work replace the cable and housing,Easy fix on a 74 
|
