i am thinkin of taking out my cat. on a 85 corvette but there is a hard metal tube or hose coming from the top of the it? is it important to the car or is it just a hose that inst essential for the cars running properly?  

Well, removing your catalytic converter can actually get you arrested, it's required by law.  However, cat's can wear out, rust through, or fall off, requiring them to be replaced.  While most of the time when anything like that happens, the cat will get replaced with an OEM type, but you can replace it entirely with a newer higher flowing cat that will likely outflow the stock cat and still meet emission requirements.  Something you may want to consider if replacing your cat is to get ahold of a pair of high-flow cats and make your '85 a true dual-exhaust system.  But removing it entirely can get you in a whole mess of trouble.  

i am aware of that, but if you could give me the number or website of a place where i can get a high flow cat. it would be greatly appreciated because i do not like how the only thing keeping the 85's exhaust from being true duals is the cat.

Just a quick search on Corvette Central turned up Part Number 325004, which is a pair of SLP high-flow Cats at ~$400.  

Another option (though I can't really recommend this   ) is to take the stock cat and "gut" it, so the case is still there but the innards are gone along with their power robbing flow issues.
