Help, please, I am working on my Son Inlaw's 64 corvette. We changed the carb to a 4160, 650 Holley and now have problems with it backfiring through the carb. I have checked the timing, (12BTDC) and everything else looks OK. I changed the Accelerator cams, and put in the highest one, drilled the shooter, slightly, but when you stomp on it, there is a flat spot and then a backfire, then it goes. Any ideas?

What size accelerator pump are you using?

Could the new carb on the Corvette have been damaged while you were installing it?

Check and make sure the float bowl arms haven't been bent. Also, if the carb has the plastic float bowls, they're notorious for causing problems. If they're plastic, I'd look at converting to the good old brass floats.

WHOA! I feel like a fool that I just noticed this. Your timing is set at 12 degrees before TDC? Ok. Don't touch the carb. Set your timing at zero degress before TDC and see how the car runs. From there, adjust it back until it starts backfiring. Once you know the point where it starts backfiring, retard the timing a few degrees from there.
